I’m Carl Self, a U.S. Army veteran and founder of Gates of Freedom.
My work grew from experience with addiction, relapse, recovery, and faith. I learned change takes more than good intentions.
I help individuals, families, pastors, and helpers take practical steps when alcohol, drugs, or relapse affect their lives.
I know what it is like to want to change and still find yourself repeating the same cycle.
Recovery became more than stopping alcohol or drugs. It meant facing the patterns underneath the relapse, learning accountability, rebuilding relationships, developing a life of faith, and becoming willing to do things differently.
Those experiences eventually became part of the foundation for Gates of Freedom.
I do not approach recovery from a textbook alone. I bring lived experience, biblical discipleship, practical recovery principles, and a commitment to helping people identify the next step they can actually take.

Gates of Freedom was created for people who are tired of repeating the same relapse cycle and for the people trying to help them.
The goal is simple: provide practical, faith-based support that helps people move from confusion toward clear action.
Practical mentoring, accountability, relapse interruption, and next-step planning for individuals who want to stop repeating the same cycle.
Clear guidance for family members, pastors, ministry leaders, and others trying to support someone struggling with alcohol or drugs
Relationship-based recovery ministry, biblical discipleship, teaching, meals, Bibles, practical support, and long-term development of residential recovery support.

Through mission work in Thailand, I began building relationships with people affected by alcohol, drugs, poverty, and isolation. That work has grown into ongoing ministry in Lamphun and the wider vision for Gates of Freedom.

We work through relationships, biblical teaching, shared meals, practical support, accountability, and consistent follow-through.
The long-term vision is to establish safe, accountable residential recovery support in Thailand. That remains a future development and is not currently a medical detoxification or clinical treatment facility.
Recovery takes daily effort and support. Be honest about what is happening, ask for help, and follow through on your plan.
I help you decide what to do next and support you as you put it into practice. Change takes time, and no program can promise that you will never relapse.
Gates of Freedom does not promise instant transformation or guarantee sobriety. The work is to identify the next responsible action and keep practicing it.
Gates of Freedom provides faith-based mentoring, discipleship, practical recovery support, and guidance for individuals, families, pastors, and helpers.
Gates of Freedom is not medical treatment, detoxification, psychotherapy, or emergency care.
Anyone facing a medical emergency, dangerous withdrawal, overdose, suicidal behavior, violence, or another immediate danger should contact qualified emergency or medical services.
